Kids say the darnedest things! Truth is, you don’t have to tell your kids the truth, but as they get older, you may want to consider it. Most importantly, whatever you decide to say, let’s be sure you aren’t implying that you dislike yourself, your features, or your body.
So what story should you go with? Here are a few options. No one looks at you more than your kids and just when you think they aren’t paying attention, they’ll shock you with some pretty amazing comments regarding your appearance. 1. Lie - If your kids are younger lying may be a great option. I like the “Mommy had a facial” or “moles removed” angle. It can explain bruises, bandages, stitches, pain, etc. Let’s face it; no one needs to explain breast implants to a 5 year-old. 2. Disappear - Depending on the age of your children and if you’re having surgery which requires downtime, you may want to consider a “girls trip” or “spa weekend” for yourself while you recover. Certain procedures are scary to watch and if you can avoid having your kids around worrying about you and asking questions it’s a win for everyone! 3. Be Honest - Many parents don’t believe in lying to their kids. I think a child’s mental health and ability to process is more important and should be age appropriate. That being said, you don’t need to communicate every detail of your procedure or what you had done. It may scare your kids and it’s just not necessary. Give them an honest, basic explanation of what you are having done and only answer questions asked. The goal is for them to be prepared for what is to come, bruising, bandages etc., while being reassured that you will be okay. 4. Be Smart - Whichever explanation you choose, you may end up telling your kids down the line what procedures you’ve had done and why. Try to put a positive spin on your treatments and body image. Conveying that you did not need to change things about yourself to feel better.
